Equality

As Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales I have both a legal and moral duty to promote equality and fairness through all business I conduct. That may be internally amongst staff and volunteers, through my dealings with North Wales Police or externally amongst the communities of North Wales.

Ensuring the principles of equality are driven throughout my work is not only a legal obligation; it is the right and fair thing to do. In the 21st Century, businesses need to understand equality and diversity issues to operate effectively. Here at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner we believe it makes good business sense and helps us to deliver a quality service.

As the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales I must have knowledge and understanding of the various sections of society in order to properly represent views on policing and to understand policing needs in North Wales. I strive to ensure all business areas take account of our communities and their policing needs.

I am guided by legislation as well as ethical and business considerations. In 2010 there was a large-scale overhaul of equality law which led to the introduction of the Equality Act 2010.

Equality Legislation

Jointly with the North Wales Police Force I have prepared a Strategic Equality Plan. The Equality Plan sets out both the Force and Commissioner’s equality objectives over the next three years. In creating the Plan we undertook a number of key activities. We published data and engaged with our communities to help us establish equality and diversity priorities. These priorities are detailed in the Equality Plan and are updated annually with details of performance against them. Go to the Equality Plan page for more information.
