The Police and Crime Commissioner is responsible for maintaining an efficient and effective police service for North Wales. Scrutinising and challenging North Wales Police’s performance is a key part of the Commissioner’s work. This includes monitoring performance against the Police and Crime Plan.
You can obtain information about crime levels in your neighbourhood by accessing the Home Office website, www.police.uk. Crime maps can be tailored to your geographic area of interest, and charts show crime and anti-social behaviour by category, a breakdown of ‘justice outcomes’ by category, and trends over time for all crime types and anti-social behaviour, month by month.
The HMIC Crime Comparator website provides a tool to compare crime rates, workforce numbers, cost and quality of service.
Every year, the Commissioner will publish an annual report, which will give information about what has been achieved in the previous financial year, including performance-related information and progress towards achieving the police and crime objectives
Strategic Executive Board
Through the Strategic Executive Board (the Board), the Commissioner scrutinises performance against the Police and Crime Plan, monitors policing performance and the policing budget. The Board is the decision making forum for the Police and Crime Commissioner and, where appropriate, in consultation with the Chief Constable.
The Board is chaired by the Commissioner and members include the Deputy Commissioner, the Chief Constable, Deputy Chief Constable, the Assistant Chief Constable, the Director of Finance and Resources of the police force and the Chief Executive and Chief Finance Officer of the Commissioner’s office.

Complaints and Reviews
The Police and Crime Commissioner has 3 main duties in relation to complaints and reviews, they are:
- Appropriate Authority to consider complaints about the Chief Constable,
- Duty to hold the Chief Constable to account in providing an effective and efficient complaints process, and
- Relevant Review Body of some police complaints.

At the quarterly Professional Standards Scrutiny Board meetings held with the Deputy Chief Constable and Professional Standards Department the Police and Crime Commissioner scrutinises the manner in which complaints and misconduct allegations are dealt with by North Wales Police. Scrutiny Panel of Out of Court Disposals
Out of Courts Disposals are independently assessed and scrutinised by the North Wales Scrutiny Panel. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is represented on the Scrutiny Panel along with Magistrates’ Bench Chairs, representatives from Youth Offending Teams, North Wales Probation Trust, Crown Prosecution Service, Victim Support, Force’s Administration of Justice Department and Local Policing Service.
The panel can make recommendations, feedback on individual cases to officers, communicate findings, promote best practice and identify potential policy development or training needs for consideration by the force or other agency involved. The panel cannot change the original outcome of a case and all personal information is removed prior to scrutiny.
